The Alex A. Campbell Conquer Cancer Classic Golf Tournament kicks off the charity golf season in Victoria with this year’s Silver anniversary invitational event taking place on Monday, May 6th, at three lower Vancouver Island golf courses: Royal Colwood, Gorge Vale and Victoria Golf Club. Gorge Vale Golf Club will host the 7PM dinner and ceremonies at its facilities post-game. Uplands Golf Club is not in the rotation this year as they hosted the banquet last year.

For 25 years just over 200 members of local golf clubs have eagerly signed up to play in this unique tournament, the focus of which is to raise funds for cancer patient and family support programs and cancer research. To date, the tournament has raised $849,000 and is driving towards a MILLION.

In 1987 four men got the ball rolling. John Newman and Grant McNicholl were the original founders of the Classic. Grant served as Chair of the tournament from its inception in 1988 to 1991. John served as Chair from 1992 to 1994. Ken Wilson was also involved as Registrar and continued until 2004. Cam McCallum was also instrumental in developing the tournament and H.W. Marshall was Secretary-Treasurer for the entire history of the tournament until his passing in 2005.

Since its inception, the purpose has been to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division.
